Sawyer Family History and Genealogy

Sawyer is an occupational name, meaning 'one who cuts wood into boards'. My particular family descends from Thomas Sawyer who was born in England about 1616 and died in Lancaster, Massachusetts in 1706. Because it is an occupational name, there are other unrelated Sawyer families. The often told story is that three brothers, Edward, William, and Thomas came from England on a ship commanded by Captain Parker in 1636. I have never seen any original documentation that verifies this "three brothers" story.
